Suffolk Sails was started by Jim Welland after partnering Clarence ‘Austin’ Farrar at Seahorse Sails and later Austin Farrars Sailmakers. Suffolk Sails started life in a small workshop next door to Robertsons boatyard on the river Deben in Woodbridge, liable to flooding it wasn’t long before the loft moved to it’s current premises down river next door to the famous Tidemill in Woodbridge, Suffolk. The Noble System of hollow wooden mast construction was invented by a Mr Barry Noble in Bristol England in 1986 primarily for unstayed masts on such boats as Galway Blazer and Jester. He sold the rights to the idea to Mr R Mason who successfully applied for a patent having first proved that it was a unique system of hollow wooden tube/mast construction, Patent no 2112706.
