The Thames & Solent region of the National Trust, comprises Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, the Isle of Wight and Greater London. From Stowe Landscape Gardens in the north of the region, to the Needles Old Battery on the Isle of Wight and Red House in Bexleyheath, the region offers a wide range of fascinating historic houses to visit, many glorious gardens and a wealth of unspoilt countryside. The coast of the North East of England from Berwick in the north to Whitby and beyond in the south, has an extremely rich maritime, historic and cultural heritage. The Trust was formed to make a positive contribution to the renewal of interest in traditional seagoing activities in the region. The main emphasis is on the care, maintenance, restoration and reconstruction of wooden vessels. Heritage organisations

The Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre is at 36 Eastborough, Scarborough (open Wednesday to Sunday 11am till 4pm, entrance is free). A small changing exhibition area is complimented by an archive of documents, maps, photographs and artefacts about Scarborough and the Yorkshire coast's maritime history. Heritage organisations

We are an exciting and award winning all weather attraction based on the waterside in the Isle of Wight. We are able to offer a fascinating collection of sailing and power boats of local and national interest to both family visitors and maritime enthusiasts alike. Displays include photographs, films, tools, artefacts, models, books and many other items associated with the history of boating over the past century. From unique trophies loaned by Dame Ellen MacArthur to classic wooden boats of international renown, we have something of interest to both children and adults. We work to preserve and protect the buildings, countryside and coastline of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, in a range of ways, through practical conservation, learning and discovery, and encouraging everyone to visit and enjoy their national heritage. We also educate people about the importance of the environment and of preserving our heritage for future generations, we contribute to important debates over the future of the economy, the development of people’s skills and sense of community, and the quality of the local environment in both town and country.
