Mike Clarke is a canal and industrial historian who has also researched the construction of wooden inland and coastal vessels. He lived for five years on a wooden Leeds & Liverpool Canal boat, and has been a self-employed consultant for over twenty years. His work with the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Society won a Waterways Renaissance Award, and is involved with the education and interpretation programme for the historic L&LC boat Kennet.

The programme is aimed at graduates working in the marine industry and is accredited by RINA, IMarEST and IMECHE. mtec is a consortium of three leading UK universities recognised for their excellence in marine technology education and research . The universities involved are: Newcastle University University of Southampton UCL We offer innovative, flexible postgraduate training. The programmes are part time, and designed for graduates working in the marine industry.

I have made design works for many French historical boats, mainly traditional boats of Britanny, from small fishing open boats to coasters 24m long. More than 20 replicas have been built on my plans. I have also been involved in many restoration projects and surveys of traditional wooden boats.
