Wooden yachts and clinker built dinghies have been built at Kings Boatyard, at Pin Mill on the River Orwell, since 1850. The yard has facilities to store just over 100 boats; offering launching, pressure washing, mast storage, dinghy and car parking to our customers. We can also supply swinging moorings on the River Orwell. We have the handed down skills needed to build a clinker built tender, either for rowing or with a rig, to your individual requirements. We also carry out general repairs to major restoration projects.

Pioneer Sailing Trust

The Pioneer Skills Centre is a boatyard established to provide young people with the opportunity to learn boat building and restoration skills. Work is focused on the restoration of historic sailing vessels. Boatyard tuition and services are implemented and supervised by two highly qualified and experienced shipwrights, both of whom have a wealth of experience and an established track record. This includes the restoration of the 1st Class Essex Smack 'Pioneer', for which the skills centre also offers maintenance and an operational base. Yard has barge blocks (grid) for flat bottomed vessels up to 100 feet and repair berths for round bottomed vessels up to 70 feet, as well as hard standing and undercover repair space for vessels ashore. Experienced shipwrights and traditional riggers on site and the yard will bring in other trades when necessary.
