History
CLARION OF WIGHT was built in 1963 by Lallows of Cowes, Isle of Wight, designed by Sparkman & Stephens. She was built for that year’s Admiral’s cup, skippered by Derek Boyer, and was one of 14 UK vessels participating. Alongside Max Aitken’s OUTLAW and Ron Amey's NORYEMA III – the winning team – CLARION OF WIGHT was one of the highest scorers that year, as well as winning the Fastnet Challenge Cup in that Admiral’s Cup series.
It was later owned by Sir Maurice Laing and again competed in the Admiral’s Cup in the 1970 Irish team. At some point she was relocated to France, where she spent several years ashore and was destined to be scrapped, until 2024, when she was taken in by the British National Yachting Archive. As of August 2024, they have set up a fundraiser to transport CLARION OF WIGHT back to the UK.
