History
SALTAIRE was built in 1936 by Yarwood, W J & Sons Ltd of Northwich, Cheshire, for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company Ltd, first registered in Rickmansworth. Paired with the wooden butty SALTLEY, she carried cargo between London, Birmingham and the East Midlands throughout the Second World War and up to 1948, when the Grand Union Canal Carrying Co fleet was nationalised, and transferred to British Waterways for maintenance use.
In 1987, SALTAIRE was sold by British Waterways and was restored by M Harrison to her current condition, installing a new engine and converting the day cabin to a traditional back cabin. The boat has an unconverted and sheeted original hold for carrying made from steel. The hold has the original omega pattern knees and the main internal carrying hold has hull sides which retain their upper areas in original riveted iron plate, together with original H.D rolled iron gunwales.
