The National Museum of the Royal Navy is recruiting for a full-time Conservator to join the HMS Victory Conservation Project. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key part in a large-scale project, contributing to ongoing works and core maintenance.

You will work closely with many specialisms including fellow conservators, shipwrights, archaeologists and colleagues in the wider Conservation and Collections team.

The successful applicant will line manage two Ship keepers, who are responsible for the day-to-day cleanliness of the ship.

Knowledge

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

• A professional conservation qualification at degree level.
• Knowledgeable in a wide range of interventive conservation techniques and opportunities or limitations of implementation.
• Technical competence and understanding of monitoring techniques and practical interventions to promote preventive conservation.
• Best practice in the care of a wide range of materials.
• Technical competence and understanding of Integrated Pest Management and best practice in pest prevention.
• Compliance with Health and Safety.

Experience

The ideal candidate will have experience of:

• Experience of working with an historic ship/historic building environment or experience of working with industrial collections and/or modern materials.
• Experience in people management.
• Experience in implementing IPM practises would be an advantage.
• Cataloguing and recording with collections management database.
• Experience of working within collections storage facilities including racking and palletised collections, along with the movement of medium sized objects.
• Working collaboratively within teams.
• Relevant work experience post-graduation is desirable.
• Proven commitment to own personal development and willingness to undertake relevant training.
• Ability to organise and prioritise workload to meet challenging demands and comply with deadlines.
