History

QUEEN GALADRIEL was built in 1937 by J Ring-Andersen Skibsvaerft at Svenborg in Denmark, which is one of the oldest wooden shipyards in Denmark. She was originally called ELSE after the first Captains daughter. She traded as a cargo vessel around the coasts of Denmark and Norway, first as a motor sailer but after 1956 under motor alone. A previous owner before 1969 had cut off the main mast to make a derrick and left the vessel with just a mizzen and an engine.

Although a complete history is not available, records show that the vessel was sold to D Knight in 1971, with a Certificate of Entry to UK issued 11 February 1972. She was noted as in River Crouch as salvage June 1975. Sold and a Declaration of Ownership for Yvonne Thurston in UK 19 April 1978. Sold to Robert Norton August 1978. Letters between Peter J Tate Marine Engineer and Robert Norton confirm that ELSE is to be accommodated with them in Manningtree September 1978.  Owner R Norton has a new mast fitted after he takes ownership in 1978.

In 1983 she was bought by the Cirdan Trust, extensively restored and re-rigged, and in 1984 she entered service as QUEEN GALADRIEL. The Trust specialises in enabling groups of young people and individuals, particularly those who are disadvantaged in some way, to experience the challenge and adventure of life at sea on large sailing vessels.  It also owns and operates two other vessels; 1912 gaff yawl DUET and 1981 Bermudan Ketch FARAMIR.
