History

THE BALTIC EXCHANGE (ON964) is a Watson Class lifeboat and was built in 1962 by J Samuel White & Co of Cowes, Isle of Wight. She was paid for by the members of the Baltic Exchange and was originally fitted with twin Gardner 5LW engines.

She spent her entire service life in Salcombe, launching 258 times and saving 76 lives between 1962 and 1988. While on service in 1983, the vessel capsized but righted herself again. The crew rescued one crew member who had been washed away and there was no loss of life.

In 1989 she was sold out of service, becoming a pleasure boat at Birdham Quay, Chichester. Little is known of her history since then, only that at some point she was known as BALTIC AIR. As of 2025, she is undergoing conservation by her current owners, who are looking to restore her to how she was during her service career.
