History
FREYA was built in 1910 by CHAMBERS, JOHN & CO. of Lowestoft. She first appears on the Lloyds Register in 1912 as a Cutter, owned by W.G Garrood and with a sail area of 860sq ft. In 1927, according to the Lloyds Register, FREYA was altered from the cutter rig to a yawl by W.G Garrood, still retaining the 860 sq ft of sail area.
At some point between 1950 and 56 she was altered to a ketch, reducing the sail area to 567sq ft, and was listed as having a 4-cylinder petrol engine. She was owned at this time by a Lt. Col. J.I.D Home. After this, several changes of owners are listed in the registers, many of them being based at Pin Mill in Lowestoft. After 1977, little is known of FREYA other than that it featured in an episode of of the 80s TV series 'Lovejoy' with a Ketch rig sailing in what is thought to be the Hamble river.
In 2016, the current owner M Wellburn found FREYA lying in Dolphin Quay, Emsworth. She had sank several times with the tide and, despite having been fitted with a new deck, deck under structure and rudder in 2007-8 by T. Gilmore, shipwright at Dolphin Quay Yard, she was in need of a serious re-build. 6 years later, in May 2022, FREYA was seaworthy again.
