History

Built in 1935 by Harland & Wolff, Woolwich, SOUTHERN CROSS is a narrow boat of iron construction with a diesel engine by Lister, model HA3. Built for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company, she was passed into the pleasure craft fleet of British Waterways in the 1950s and was used as a trip boat on the Regents Canal in London. After passing into private ownership in 1978 she was fully converted and used as a houseboat based on the river chess. But, in later years, she was left uncared for. Her previous owner de-converted the boat in 2008 with the original intention of restoring her back to her 1950s trip boat appearance. She was sold to her present owner in 2011 who has completely re-restored the boat in order to use her as a carrying boat.
