History
Built in 1936 by Harland & Wolff, Woolwich for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company, a narrow boat of steel construction with a Lister HR2 diesel engine. She started working as a paired motor with a butty, later working as a single motor for British Waterways. After a spell on maintenance work she was restored to full running order in 1998 being used for freight demonstrations and filming.
BARNET then reverted to British Waterways ownership in 2003, fell into disrepair, sank and was vandalised before being acquired by her present owners for intended use as a demonstration carrying boat to evaluate the underused Northern Birmingham Canal Routes.
BARNET has never been out of commercial service and features in several films. She is the sole narrowboat to retain the mock liner funnel which were a feature of 1930s vessels.
