We are pleased to offer two workshop sessions which can be delivered individually or consecutively at your chosen site.  These provide an ideal learning experience for trainees, apprentices, volunteers and maritime heritage professionals.  The workshops are focussed on topics linked to units 1 and 4 in our Historic Vessel Conservation course, enabling students to familiarise themselves with the content and terminology in an interactive session, drawing on case studies from across the sector.  It is not necessary to complete the full course to book a workshop, as these can be used as a separate form of instruction or to complement learning.

Statements of Significance Workshop: Overview

Designed by National Historic Ships UK for every type of vessel, Statements of Significance can be used by individuals, funders or organizations to help them better understand a craft's heritage merit, and provide a basis for determining individual maintenance programmes, conservation methods, investment priorities and where appropriate, approaches to rehoming or deaccessioning.

But what exactly are Statements of Significanceand how would you set about preparing one?  This workshop will provide you with an understanding of the theory behind these invaluable documents and a practical approach to writing a statement for any craft, enabling you to make decisions about what to include in an informed way.

This session is aimed at those who are new to writing Statements of Significance as well as those who would like to improve their vessel research skills. It is relevant to anyone with an interest in maritime heritage or responsibility for a historic vessel.

Conservation Gateway Workshop: Overview

Conserving Historic Vessels, the third volume in the National Historic Ships UK guidance series Understanding Historic Vessels was published in 2010 to set a standard of best practice for ship and boat conservation projects worldwide. It follows a 9-phase process from gaining a full understanding of a vessel, through stabilisation, to making a decision on the most appropriate conservation approach. The crux of this journey is the Conservation Gateway, where critical choices are made which may impact on surviving fabric or the vessel's ability to share its story with us.

This workshop will provide you with an understanding of the key steps along the conservation pathway, giving you confidence in the decision making process.  It will help you identify what information is needed to make a conservation choice, explaining how to analyse and consider the consequences.

The session is aimed at those working with historic vessels who wish to gain an understanding of the various conservation routes and the different outcomes which can result from the choices made.   Having a thorough knowledge of these, along with their limitations, will help ensure that conservation decisions are directly linked to vessel significance and follow a long-term strategy.

Price:

Workshops will last approximately 4 hours, and will be delivered by the NHS-UK team at a cost of £475 per session, plus expenses.  Travel, accommodation and subsistence will be individually calculated for each site and a quote provided on request.

All students will receive a certificate of completion confirming their attendance at the workshop.
