Elegant, sleek, unique, pacy, comfortable, safe, mannerly, superbly balanced, simply handled. A piece of sailing history all the way from Royal Thames round the coasts to both sides of the Irish Sea and beyond. Comfortable cruising annually anywhere between La Rochelle and Stornoway. Can be sailed and even raced single-handed. This is a boat looking for the right, enthusiastic, discerning owner. In good condition, fully in commission and ready to sail away for racing or comfortable safe cruising.
HISTORY:
Built by W & S Luke at Hamble as Apertyx until renamed in 1927. Mainly raced on the south coast - winning the Fastnet Race in 1953 and 1955 - then relocated to Northern Ireland in the 1950s. The current owner has cruised her from the Outer Hebrides to the Bay of Biscay and attended Brest in 1996. Has won many Round the Cans races in Strangford Lough and regattas further afield. The only Luke-built sailing yacht on the National Register of Historic Vessels, possibly the only one surviving.
WORK CARRIED OUT:
Glance's current owner bought her in a semi-derelict condition and has since restored her. The hull was raked, refastened and recaulked, horn timbers and part of the aft deck were renewed and a new rudder fitted. The wing engine was removed and refitted on the centre line. The interior has been refurbished. Her rig has been overhauled with new standing and running rigging as well as sails. Some recent cosmetic replacements such as Cap rails replaced with American White Oak since 2014, bowsprit replaced 2017, complete lead-to-deck recaulk and repay 2022 – 2023. Spruce mast, all running and standing rigging, genny furler, genny and staysail and guardrails replaced 2014. Deck glassfibre re-epoxied 2021. In 2024, topsides recaulked, sanded to timber and repainted white (was green) in response to higher summer temperatures. 2024 professional survey continuously refers to boat as sound and serviceable.
