Help Save Steam Tug Challenge – A Hero of Dunkirk Needs You

The Steam Tug Challenge, a true hero of Dunkirk, urgently needs your help!  Built in 1931, Challenge is one of the last operational steam tugs in the UK and played a critical role in the Dunkirk evacuation during World War II.  As part of the historic "Little Ships," she braved enemy fire and treacherous waters to rescue stranded Allied troops during Operation Dynamo.

Now, 85 years later, we are working tirelessly to ensure Challenge can attend the Dunkirk commemorations in May 2025.  However, time is running out. The vessel requires urgent repairs to her condenser and vacuum pump—critical components that maintain her steam system.  Without these repairs, the entire boiler and engine system could suffer significant damage, jeopardising her future as a living piece of history.

The materials alone will cost £3,000, and while skilled volunteers are donating their time and expertise, we need your support to cover the costs.

Your donation will help us keep this historic vessel steaming, allowing her to honour the memory of the brave souls who fought at Dunkirk and continue inspiring future generations.

Join us in preserving this vital piece of maritime history.  Every contribution no matter how small makes a difference.

Donate today and be part of Challenge’s story!
