WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
This week will focus on learning traditional hand finishing sail making techniques.
Each student will get to make a small demonstration gaff style sail for themselves that can be taken away for future reference. The corners and edges of this sail will be sewn and hand finished and to include the following techniques:
- use of tools and materials for traditional sail making including needle, thread and palm
- external roping of bolt rope including rat tail tapering
- leather corner work
- worked handsewn cringle eyelet and grommets
- worked external rope eye cringle
- roped peak becket
Students are encouraged to bring any traditional hand tools, such as palm, wooden fids, awls, seam rubbers,
These will be supplied for use during the course along with hand sew needles and waxed thread.
