A cracket is a small, sturdy wooden stool, traditionally made in the north of England, especially in mining communities. These stools were used by miners for sitting during breaks and often as headrests when working a seam laid on their side They were also common in households as footstools or work stools. Crackets are typically made from solid wood with simple, strong joinery, often using a single plank for the top, two side rails, and splayed legs for stability.
In our well-equipped workshop you will be guided by our expert staff through the process of:
• Marking, cutting and shaping exercise with softwood,
• Selecting timber for the cracket,
• Identifying the parts of the cracket,
• Sanding the cracket to provide a very tactile, ergonomic end-product,
• Applying a suitable finish to protect the cracket when in use.
What will be provided:
• Timber for the cracket,
• All tools/equipment needed,
• PPE – gloves, dust mask
• Full tuition provided by our experienced staff, with timely and relevant feedback
• Refreshments available throughout the day.
Things to bring with you:
• Work clothes; woodworking can be a very dusty experience,
• Safety boots/shoes, if you have them,
• Packed lunch
