HMS WELLINGTON TO TAKE PART IN NATIONAL VE DAY 80 COMMEMORATIONS ON 8TH AND 9TH MAY
 
The Wellington Trust Board of Trustees is honoured to announce HMS Wellington will be taking part in the national VE Day 80th anniversary celebrations.
 
On May 8th 1945, HMS Wellington was still on Battle of the Atlantic duties off Gibraltar.  80 years on, the Wellington Trust is commemorating VE day and the end of HMS Wellington’s Battle of the Atlantic with an exciting programme of events that will also raise vital funds to support her conservation.
 
All VE Day 80 events onboard HMS Wellington are open to members of the public. The programme:
 
Thursday 8th May  
 
0900 – 1000    Flag raising
 
VE Day 80 flag raising.  Members of the public are invited to view this from Victoria Embankment. Afterwards, the upper decks of HMS Wellington will be open to the public until 10am.  Optional tea, coffee and wartime biscuits will be served on the Quarterdeck, with a suggested donation to the Wellington Trust of £5 per head.
 
1400 – 1700    The HMS Wellington VE Day 80 experience
 
In the afternoon, the Wellington Trust is throwing a fundraising afternoon party to celebrate VE day, and in honour of all those that served onboard HMS Wellington during WWII. 
 
The HMS Wellington VE Day 80 experience includes: Welcome drinks reception on the quarterdeck; a WI Big Bake onboard (TBC); a sumptuous afternoon tea; a full programme of entertainment including 1940’s dancing to ‘The Glenn Miller Orchestra Style Band”; a raffle and other fundraising fun throughout the afternoon.
 
1940’s wartime dress is optional, with a competition for the best period dressed guest, along with other fundraising fun. 
 
Tickets are priced at £80 per person and include welcome drinks, afternoon tea and entertainment programme. The wardroom and cash bar will be open throughout.
 
Friday 9th May  
 
1200 – 1600    Fish and Chips lunch
 
HMS Wellington is open for a 1940’s style fish and chips lunch onboard the covered quarterdeck.  Guests will be able to enjoy commanding Thames Riverside views, explore the upper deck and enjoy the ambiance and atmosphere of the location where depth charges were once discharged during the Battle of the Atlantic.
 
Tickets are priced at £25 per person and include fish and chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a cup of tea.  There is a choice of four sittings: 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500.  The wardroom and cash bar will be open throughout.
 
All VE Day 80 events are open to members of the public, with tickets strictly limited due to the size of the ship. Tickets can only be purchased in advance via the Wellington Trust website.
