The Society for Nautical Archaeology has announced a new CARBON LITERACY COURSE for the Maritime Heritage Sector.

The course is funded by Historic England and accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project. This is an online course with multiple date options. Get practical tips on how to reduce your carbon footprint in the office, the museum, onboard a boat, in a lighthouse, on the foreshore and at home.

You will learn about sustainable practices and reducing carbon footprint in the maritime heritage industry. This training course is perfect for anyone passionate about preserving our maritime heritage while being environmentally conscious. Participate in interactive workshops with industry peers, and gain valuable insights on how to make a positive impact. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of the solution!

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

Learn how to identify and reduce your organisation’s carbon emissions and become more environmentally stable while you become ‘Carbon Literate’ and gain a nationally recognised accreditation.

Carbon Literacy is defined as an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.

To support the sector in improving its carbon literacy, Historic England has created this dedicated Heritage Carbon Literacy course which has been designed for heritage organisations and this version has been specifically adapted to be relevant to those working in maritime heritage. It includes case studies and examples sourced directly from the sector, and trainers who have work experience in the heritage space.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

· 1.5 hours pre-course work in your own time, watching videos and calculating your carbon footprint

· 2 half-days of live online training with the expert tutor

· 1 hour to complete the qualifying activities

WHEN IS IT TAKING PLACE?

The course is being run five times. You must attend both sessions to complete the qualification. Click on your preferred date option to book your place.

Thursday 5th and Friday 6th December 2024 - 9.30am to 1pm

Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th January 2025 - 9.30am to 1pm

Thursday 13th and Friday 14th March 2025 - 1pm to 4.30pm

WHO IS IT FOR?

Anyone interested in reducing their carbon footprint and helping their organisation become more environmentally friendly, particularly those from maritime heritage organisations such as heritage vessels, dive clubs, museums, heritage harbours, marine archaeology units. Participants must be based in England.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The main course costs are funded by Historic England, which means that learners will only have to pay a £10 contribution cost towards the administration of their Carbon Literacy Trust certification. Places are limited to one representative per UK-based organisation, and there are a set number of places available for each course – so book early to secure your place!

WHY DO THE TRAINING?

Studies by Historic England show that the majority of heritage organisations are only starting to get to grips with NetZero. This is the Government’s strategy to decarbonise all sectors of the UK economy to meet our Net Zero target by 2050. It is essential that heritage organisations begin to plan for Net Zero as soon as possible and they often need support on the preparatory phase of this journey, including having a better understanding of the impacts and causes of carbon emissions, and of the policies and measures to implement to reduce them.

ABOUT THE COURSE

The course has been created by Historic England and is accredited by the Carbon Literacy Trust. Carbon Literacy is a key way for organisations to gain an awareness of the causes and impacts of climate change and an understanding of carbon emissions. It provides a great foundation for individuals, teams and organisations to begin to take steps towards reducing their carbon emissions and become more environmentally sustainable.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

As an individual, Carbon Literacy is an opportunity to gain a nationally recognised accreditation. You have a greater understanding of your carbon footprint and pledge to make a difference.

As a team, Carbon Literacy allows you to collaborate and generate ideas on topics such as what does a low carbon heritage organisation look like and the co-benefits that historic environments and climate actions have.

As an organisation, your staff will understand the impacts of climate change and actions, and will support behaviour change across the organisation, which will contribute to sustainability and Net Zero goals.

As a sector, this training will help us collectively make a difference through taking responsibility and committing to lowering our emissions.

WHO IS THE TUTOR?

Catherine Mailhac is a freelance consultant, who facilitates Carbon Literacy training for the museum and heritage sector. She runs Museum Development’s Seeds for Action peer support programme, helping people to put their Carbon Literacy pledges into action.  Catherine has worked with Sarah Rousseau from Historic England and Peta Knott from the Nautical Archaeology Society, to adapt this course for the maritime heritage sector.
