History
CARIAD was built in 1904 by E Rowles at Pill near Bristol as a Bristol Channel pilot cutter. She was the last pilot cutter still working in 1922 and later became a yacht. She was featured in Frank Carr’s ‘A Yachtsmans Log’ and was cutter rigged, but with a 22 hp engine added.
She was preserved afloat at the Exeter Maritime Museum in the 1970s and was acquired for further preservation at Newport, Wales in 1988. She has subsequently been restored and is in private ownership.
These brief histories are compiled from details supplied by vessel owners and enthusiasts and from various reference works. National Historic Ships would be grateful for any corrections of facts or additional information for inclusion. Please contact ron.ellis@nationalhistoricships.org.uk
