History

Thames Sailing barge BERIC is a fine example of an industrial era. Built at Harwich in 1896, she principally ferried grain and flour between Ipswich and London. She was one of the last sea-going wooden vessels to carry cargo in Britain, trading up until 1977.

BERIC has now been fully restored and, based in St Katherine’s Dock, is used for corporate and private charter. Whilst the owners have ensured that BERIC'S re-fit was in keeping with her historic origins, she now boasts electric lighting, a PA system and even a full-size sunken bath! Hosting weddings, parties, product launches and exhibitions, she has also been the venue for the ‘Transport Trust Awards’ presented by HRH Prince Michael of Kent.

These brief histories are compiled from details supplied by vessel owners and enthusiasts and from various reference works. National Historic Ships would be grateful for any corrections of facts or additional information for inclusion. Please contact ron.ellis@nationalhistoricships.org.uk
