History

CMB 331 is the only remaining example of her kind. She is the 1917 type, with two V12 engines and was built to a revolutionary stepped hull design, enabling her to reach a speed of forty knots.

CMB 331 was built for the Philippines’ Navy, but was requisitioned by the Admiralty in August 1941. She was placed in the disposal unit in May 1945, but from 1951 to 1980 was used as a motor cruiser.

In 1990, she was acquired by new owners with a view to preserving her as an example of Thornycroft’s work and also as a representative of the Coastal Forces. She received emergency conservation and was put in storage, pending further restoration.

These brief histories are compiled from details supplied by vessel owners and enthusiasts and from various reference works. National Historic Ships would be grateful for any corrections of facts or additional information for inclusion. Please contact ron.ellis@nationalhistoricships.org.uk
