History

Built in Brightlingsea in 1907, MY ALICE is a rare example of a Kidby smack, used to stow-boat for sprats. She would have anchored, dropped a net and waited for the tide to fill it with shoals of sprats; hauls were sometimes as large as 15 tons. With the catch in the hold, it was a race back to port to obtain the highest price.

MY ALICE was thought to be one of the quickest smacks of her day. She is a large, powerful boat who fished until 1985 and is now a successful racing craft. She was recently rebuilt in a restoration taking over six years.

These brief histories are compiled from details supplied by vessel owners and enthusiasts and from various reference works. National Historic Ships would be grateful for any corrections of facts or additional information for inclusion. Please contact ron.ellis@nationalhistoricships.org.uk
