History

The narrowboat EMPRESS was built in 1887 by Fellows, Morton & Clayton Ltd. at Birmingham. Between 1887 and 1919, she operated as a steam fly boat. She was converted to a semi-diesel engine in 1919 and, until 1952, was worked by Ernest Thomas of Walsall as a tug. In the late 1960s, she entered private ownership.

These brief histories are compiled from details supplied by vessel owners and enthusiasts and from various reference works. National Historic Ships would be grateful for any corrections of facts or additional information for inclusion. Please contact ron.ellis@nationalhistoricships.org.uk
