Simon Stephens
Simon Stephens joined the National Maritime Museum in 1979 as junior curator in the department of ships, working with both the ship model and boat collections, which he currently curates. During his years at the Museum, he has contributed to and curated various galleries and exhibitions, and more recently spent five years working on the new National Maritime Museum, Cornwall. As a result of these wonderful and varied collections, Simon has gained a wide and in-depth understanding of most maritime subjects. In particular, he has a special interest in the history and design of the sailing navy, lifesaving, seamanship and ship models. His publications include books and articles on ship models, ship’s boats as well as consultancy work for both adult and children’s books.
For the last three years, Simon has been working for the National Historic Ships Unit on a part-time basis which has involved re-evaluating and visiting the historic ships fleet.
